Comprehensive Dental Exams
Your regular dental exams provide an opportunity for Dr. Brandt Jones to monitor changes in your oral health. At your exam, our dentists will thoroughly review the health of your teeth, gums, and jaw function. They also perform periodic oral cancer screenings to identify any suspicious lesions that may indicate malignancy. Especially when detected early, oral cancer is usually highly treatable.
Our assistants will make notes regarding any conditions during your exams, and your dentist will go over your findings with you. We use intraoral cameras in our office to take digital images inside your mouth so you can see exactly what we see. This helps our patients gain an understanding of their oral health, which then assists them in making educated oral health decisions that can impact the future of their smile.
Digital Dental X-Rays
Because of the protective layer of enamel that covers your teeth and the fact that the root of your tooth is beneath your gums, not every oral health condition is visible to the naked eye. Dental x-rays allow us to see what lies beneath the surface and spot hidden decay and infection.
We use digital dental x-rays because of their high-resolution image capabilities and because they are extremely safe for our patients, with up to 80 percent less radiation than traditional film x-rays.
Professional Dental Cleanings
You could be a brushing and flossing champion and it would still be impossible to remove all traces of plaque from your teeth with brushing and flossing alone.
Professional dental cleanings remove the plaque and tartar that collect between your teeth and just below the gumline. Regular dental cleanings can help prevent gum disease and decay.
We customize your dental cleaning based on your needs. If you are a patient who is recovering from periodontal (gum) disease, you will need a different type of cleaning than someone who visits the dentist regularly and has great home care. Your oral health can change throughout your lifetime, and our hygiene team will always make sure you receive the type of cleaning you need to stay healthy and comfortable.

I wanted to tell you how terrific the new mouth guard is working out. I was experiencing migraines on an almost daily basis when I first came to you. I had a feeling I was clenching my teeth and jaw. You made me my custom mouth guard and it seemed that the migraines went away instantaneously. As long as I wear the mouth guard the migraines cease to appear.
I cannot thank you enough for the relief this product has given me. I would recommend the “mouth guard” to anyone who suffers migraines at night due to clenching the jaw or grinding the teeth.

With good oral hygiene habits and a normally healthy mouth, Dr. Jones typically suggests a professional cleaning, or a prophylaxis, by one of our exceptional hygienists at least twice a year. The goal of regular dental cleanings is to remove plaque, tarter, and any stains that may have accumulated on the teeth, as wells as to prevent and treat gum disease. Even with the best at-home oral hygiene habits, tarter and plaque can still develop.
Deeper Dental Cleaning
Sometimes it is necessary to do a “deeper” cleaning, known as scaling and root planing. A regular prohylaxis focuses on the surface and in between the teeth, and stays above the gum line. A scaling and root planning cleaning is needed in order to remove any bacteria and calculus that may have collected under the gum line and on the surface of the roots of your teeth. This deeper cleaning is the best way to treat gum disease and helps prevent bone loss, which can loosen the teeth and causing them to become mobile.

Cancer and its more common treatments, like chemotherapy and radiation, are known to diminish your body’s immune system. If you are not up to date with your dental care and don’t make sure your mouth is as healthy as possible prior to treatment, you are more susceptible to infection, which can also lead to a delay in your cancer treatments. Radiation, especially when focused on the head or neck area, can damage your salivary glands. This can cause thick, sticky saliva, as well as extreme dry mouth. Dry mouth is known to increase your chances of infection and tooth decay as well. Other side effects include changes in taste, mouth sores, bone disease and inflammation or pain in the lining of the mouth and tongue. These kinds of side effects can make it difficult to talk, eat, chew, or swallow.
Importance of Oral Health
It is important to maintain the best oral health you can prior to, during, and after your cancer treatments. Oral health is an important part of your overall health. Dr. Jones is happy to be a part of your cancer care team to evaluate your dental health and discuss any treatment options that should be considered prior to starting any kind of cancer treatment. It is very common to prescribe fluoride treatments or take-home trays to help prevent cavities during your cancer treatment.
Every patient is different, so when you call our office, our knowledgeable team will ask some questions regarding your oral health that will help us maximize your first dental visit.
