Children’s Dentistry Castle Rock, CO
We know that few things are more special to a parent than their child’s smile and good health. Our goal at Oakwood Dental is to keep your little one’s smile healthy and comfortable so that he or she can thrive.
Dr. Brandt Jones loves treating kids, and they are always our special guests. We make scheduling easy by offering the option to schedule your child's appointment simultaneously with your own. Our busy families love this convenience.
Your Child’s First Dental Appointment
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child have his or her first dental appointment by their first birthday. This milestone is an opportunity for our team to help your child develop a positive relationship with oral health and to take the fear of the unknown out of their dental appointments.
We also use this early childhood dental appointment to educate and communicate with parents. We are here to answer all your questions about what to expect as your child grows, what to do about habits such as thumb sucking, and how to properly care for your child’s teeth and gums.
“Tell-Show-Do” Interactive Dentistry
Involving your child in their own dentistry will help keep them calm, interested, and cooperative. We tell your child what to expect during treatment, using language that they will understand. Next, we show them what will happen using educational demonstrations. Finally, we perform the necessary dental treatment, always going at your child’s pace.
Children’s Cavity Prevention
Municipal water fluoridation has dramatically reduced the number of cavities that Americans develop, but it is not enough.
Brushing your child’s teeth with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste twice daily is an essential component of optimum oral health. If your child is particularly prone to decay, we can also recommend additional cavity prevention treatments:
Fluoride varnish – We can paint professional-strength fluoride on your child's teeth to remineralize them and harden the enamel that protects each tooth.
Dental sealants – Dental sealants are an effective barrier between bacteria, food particles, and the surface of your child’s teeth. This non-invasive treatment is a fraction of the cost of fillings and can last several years before replacement becomes necessary.
No Cavity Club
You child can be a star in our office and have their picture put on our wall when they have their exam and are cavity-free. This is a great motivation for kids to brush and floss at home.
Athletic Mouthguards
When your child starts playing sports, we can create a custom mouthguard to protect their teeth while they play football, hockey, soccer, or any other sport where injury is a possibility.
Over-the-counter mouthguards often do not fit snugly and may come loose. Custom athletic mouthguards stay put when your child needs it most.

Fluoride is a mineral that naturally occurs in water and in many foods. Fluoride treatments are administered by the dentist to help prevent decay. At Oakwood Dental, we recommend topical fluoride treatments for both children and adults. Fluoride helps strengthen the tooth enamel, which is the hard coating on your teeth. Fluoride works with the saliva to help protect the enamel from plaque and “sugar bugs.”
How Flouride Helps Your Teeth
The loss of enamel, or demineralization, eventually causes cavities. Remineralization occurs when fluoride, calcium, and phosphate minerals are deposited back into the enamel. This helps keep your enamel strong, safer from decay, and more resistant to acid attacks from sugars and plaque bacteria in the mouth. When fluoride is administered to children age 6 and under, it is integrated into the growth of the permanent teeth. This makes it difficult for acids to demineralize the teeth. Fluoride also helps disrupt any acid production in teeth that have already erupted in both children and adults.
A sealant is a thin, plastic coating that is painted on to the chewing surface of a tooth. It is most common for sealants to be placed on permanent molars and premolars (back teeth) to prevent decay. Sealants are a protective shield over the enamel that quickly bonds to the grooves of the tooth.
Importance of Sealants
Sealants are highly recommended for children and teenagers to help prevent any decay throughout their most cavity-prone years of ages 6 through 14. In some cases, it is recommended to place sealants on baby teeth as well if they have deep depressions or grooves. It is important to take care of the baby teeth because they play such an important role in the correct spacing of the permanent teeth, so it is beneficial to avoid losing baby teeth too early due to preventable decay. While flossing and brushing can remove plaque and food from the smooth surfaces of the teeth, it is harder to get into all of the nooks and crannies. Especially on those back teeth. That is where sealants come in handy to help protect those more vulnerable areas by “sealing out” food and plaque.
Sealant Process in 80104
The application of sealants is a quick and painless procedure. Sealants can help protect teeth from decay for up to 10 years, but they do need to be checked regularly by your dentist or hygienist for chipping or normal wearing. Luckily, sealants can be replaced as often as necessary, if needed. Most insurance companies cover the cost of sealants up to a certain age limit, which can vary with each plan. At Oakwood Dental, we are happy to verify your benefits for you to see what coverage you have.
We know that one of the challenges modern families face is scheduling appointments to get all the care everyone needs, especially when you have soccer games, music lessons, the school play, and other important priorities competing for your time.
